Finding all books in a page

by Bergo

Ever wanted to find all the books in a page?

Perhaps there are a list of ISBNs with no links? This is often the case with some academic works.

So I’ve built the “Nescholar - Books in Page” tool

This link below can be installed or added to your favourites.

NeoScholar - Books in Page

For Firefox - Drag the link to your toolbar

For IE - Right Click the link - add to favourites

How do you use it?

When your on a page you want to scan just click the link from your favourites or tool bar. It’s that simple. Hopefully we’ll know whats on that page.

Betterworld - Ecologically and Socially responsible book buying

by Bergo

Recently I mentioned that International Shipping rates were up.

And then I stumbled upon, BetterWorld.com. From their site:

Can you fund literacy, care for the environment,
and get a fair price on the books you want?
Yep. You’re doing it right now.

I think that’s pretty cool.

So, I don’t have any magic way of searching their database, and showing the results when you search for a book. But you might want to take a look.

It’s $2.97 USD to ship internationally !

That’s $9 - $10 cheaper than Amazon.com and Alibris.

I am still waiting for my book to arrive (should be a few weeks).

It’s Another option for grabbing a bargain and helping fun literacy in underprivileged countries overseas.

Rising cost of international shipping

by Bergo

Costs are up on shipping. Is this the cost of Oil and it’s affect on transportation? who knows. All I know that shipping Internationally, and for me specifically to Australia, has gone up for both Alibris and Amazon. When viewing a book, we (NeoScholar) calculate the cost of shipping based on your country.

Within the last few months, Amazon has increased shipping from US $9.98 to $11.98.

That’s a 20% increase in international shipping costs for Amazon !

What about Alibris you ask:

When I started at the end of 2005 an Alibris International Ship was US $7.49, sometime last year it shifted to $9.98 (A 33% increase), and just recently increased again to $12.49 (Another 25% increase).

Overall for the last 18 Months, Alibris has increased their international shipping by 66%

By far the most expensive part of most books I buy is shipping. I have bought $0.01 books, but most cost about $5-7 USD.

That means that shipping is 2-3 times more expensive than the actual item (but still cheaper than some bookstores here in Australia). I don’t know why this is the case. Both Alibris and Amazon charge a flat rate for shipping, while Abebooks has the flexbility of per seller charges.

I am pretty sure that all Alibris purchases are sent to them for checking, before they are shipped out to you. This obviously makes the process more expensive, but I guess it also means there are less incorrect purchases.

I just bought two books today ( Shockwave Rider and Slaughterhouse Five ) which only had a shipping cost of US $8 per book. These were from Abebooks. Their variable shipping rates per merchant allow for better prices (internationally at least).

I’ll be keeping an eye out for more hikes, hopefully we wont see any .. or perhaps a decline?

What is NeoScholar?

by Bergo

This is part dream, a tool and a work in progress.

I like buying and reading books. NeoScholar is a tool I built to price compare between Alibris, Abebooks and Amazon.

Originally, this was a side project on a somewhat Cyberpunk, but more technology impact on society, blog Brooders.net

So, I have many plans for NeoScholar .. I want to build tools that a NeoScholar of todays world would need that aren’t there yet.

But for the moment, if you need to look for books then NeoScholar can help.
